Smoke Chasers

Smoke Chasers: Smoke Chasers describes digital environments where conflict, accusations, complaints and emotionally charged experiences attract disproportionate attention.

Where it shows up

The squeaky wheel does not only get the grease anymore. It gets indexed. A handful of upset customers, who have both the grievance and the time, will always be louder online than thousands of satisfied ones who quietly moved on with their lives. Smoke Chasers is Power100's name for the platforms, threads and pages where that dynamic concentrates, pulling visibility toward conflict regardless of how representative it is of the company as a whole.

A caveat, printed in full: "Smoke Chaser" is a Power100 strategic term describing the visibility dynamics of high-engagement negative narratives. It is not an assertion that any platform or reviewer acts dishonestly. People posting a genuine complaint have every right to be heard. The term describes what tends to get amplified, not who is at fault for amplifying it.

How it is measured

Power100 maintains a Smoke-Chaser Watchlist inside the monthly Reputation Intelligence report: the high-engagement negative narratives currently gaining visibility, tracked so leadership can investigate what is true in them and build the rest of the record around what is not.
